Leading re-use social enterprise awarded £500,000 to open new base in the Valleys
Toogoodtowaste is thrilled to announce that it has been successful with its application to the Big Lottery People and Places Fund, and has secured a grant of £500,000 to open a showroom, workshops and community space in Treorchy.
Nearly three years ago the social enterprise purchased the Former Education Centre on Horeb Street, in the town and has been busy applying for planning permission and grant funding to bring this building back into use.
This funding will enable Toogoodtowaste to create a vibrant new facility, which will engage the community in training, life-long learning and volunteering to deliver anti-poverty, re-use and recycling services. The organisation’s aim is to give the building the life it had as a school and for local people to love it again.
The building will be developed to create a large charity showroom, displaying safe, clean and affordable pre-owned items of furniture, electrical, clothing and household items at affordable prices, a large workshop, a customer car park and community spaces.
Shaun England, Chief Executive said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive the decision from the Big Lottery People & Place programme that our application has been successful. This project will allow us to develop our services in the Rhondda Fawr valley, where the needs of the organisation have been greatly highlighted.
“The project will see us develop an iconic building into a vibrant community facility, combining retail, volunteering, training & essential community space.”
Highlighting the importance of the People and Places programme, Rona Aldrich, Wales Committee Member for the Big Lottery Fund, said: “Programmes like People and Places are making a difference to the lives of so many people in communities across Wales.
“It delivers on our promise to use National Lottery funding to regenerate and revitalise communities, tackle disadvantage head on and leave a lasting legacy.”
The building work is scheduled to commence towards the end of 2017 and continual progress on the project will be posted on their website: www.toogoodtowaste.co.uk.
