Skills for Work Week – what we look for at the Centre
It’s Skills for Work Week, this week, and we’re marking the occasion by looking at what it takes to work at the Wales Co-operative Centre, while a number of us will be shadowing each other for a day, to get a better understanding of our work and how our colleagues do their jobs.
The week starts off today, with ‘What Employers Want Day’ and our HR team has provided an insight into what they look for from applicants for any of our vacancies:
“When we recruit we develop a list of job duties which outline what the role will specifically involve on a day to day basis. Alongside this we develop a person specification – and this looks at the essential and desirable skills and experience which applicants need to have in order to perform the job duties.
The Wales Co-operative Centre has an application form recruitment process, where we ask candidates to complete a supporting statement. Within that supporting statement we ask that candidates demonstrate how they meet the essential and desirable criteria of the person specification. It is helpful to the shortlisting panel if applicants are very specific about how they meet the required criteria – either by using the criteria as headings to each paragraph with an explanation/evidence beneath, or by referencing the criteria in their submissions using the criteria numbers (1.1, 1.2 etc.).
Shortlisting is done on an objective scoring basis. Candidates are scored as to how well they have demonstrated that they meet essential and desirable criteria of the person specification, the highest scoring candidates will be invited to interview. Candidates need to be detailed in their supporting statement, but also to the point. We ask that candidates try to keep their supporting statement to 2 pages. We provide a document called ‘tips for candidates’ on the careers page of the website where we advertise all of our roles, which details the above, so that candidates have an understanding of how to complete the application form to the highest standard.”
So, if you ever find yourself applying for a job with us we hope you find that information useful.
